ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITURE WORKSHOP – September 17-19th in Wirksworth

By Martin, June 7, 2010 1:41 pm

The Photographers’ Place workshop weekend, September 17-19 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, is on the theme of environmental portraiture, with a guest, Brian Griffin, one of Britain’s most distinguished portrait photographers.

The weekend is about approaches to portraiture on location. There will be plenty of practical experience, going out into the old market town in small groups, to ‘sitters’ and locations arranged in advance for you to photograph – or you can go off to do your own thing. And there will be a session on how to use lighting to improve portraits.

The three leaders, all teachers in photography and all with a wealth of experience and strong individual approaches in portraiture, are Paul Hill, Nick Lockett and Martin Shakeshaft.

Brian Griffin, with his huge experience in making iconic images of famous faces, will be joining the workshop on Saturday to offer his expertise. It is an opportunity to hear four strong voices on making photographic portraits on location.

There will be open feedback sessions on images made during the weekend and portfolio reviews on request. Again, it is an opportunity to ‘eat sleep and breathe’ photography for a whole weekend with supportive and like-minded practitioners in an informal environment.

The fee for the weekend workshop is £300 which includes accommodation, full board and all tuition.

Frequently Asked Questions – For Our September Workshop…..

By Martin, June 7, 2010 9:00 am

Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many nights accommodation are included?

There are 2 nights accommodation, 2 dinners, 2 packed lunches and 2 breakfasts and all  tuition included.

2) As I don’t drive and rely on public transport can you tell me how accessible the place is?

Derby is well connected by train and by bus. If you can make your way there, we will arrange to collect you on Friday and return you on Sunday. Let me know your travel plans and we can arrange a lift.

3) What kind of place is the accommodation? Is it outside Wirksworth or in the town? Is it a youth hostel?

The Glenorchy Centre is a chapel hall recently converted to take groups up to 26. It is in the middle of Wirksworth with a paying car park adjacent. We will have the whole centre for the weekend. It has a large hall where we will show work on a data projector, a dining room and kitchen for our meals and downstairs there is shared dormitory accommodation.

4) Are the rooms single, or is there a single supplement?

All the accommodation is dormitory accommodation, one for males, the other for females, with bathrooms etc. We are unable to offer any private accommodation at the Centre. If this is important to you but you would still like to join in the workshop, there are several B and Bs and hotels locally for those who do not choose to overnight at The Glenorchy Centre. Let us know and we can give more details. The fee for the weekend will be smaller.

5) Is there access at the centre for those with less mobility?

There is a lift to get downstairs.

6) Is the portraiture element with ‘ sitters’ (or people who have agreed to be photographed ) or is it photographing strangers?

We have based the workshop in Wirksworth, a small market town with friendly locals. We will arrange times with subjects (ie some of the friendly local people) and locations for you to photograph. We may begin by trying out some portraiture techniques on each other. Then we will be going out in groups around the town. We will not be photographing in a studio.

7) How big will the groups be ?

Groups will be no more than five people per tutor at the most, and with three tutors and Brian Griffin, each person has plenty of opportunity for experimenting and for individual attention. Or at any point you can go off to do your own thing.

‘8) Will you be using flash photography ?

One of the tutors, Nick Lockett, will run a session on how he uses portable flash lighting off-camera in his portrait work. We have small portable flashes for you to use at the workshop.

9) Is it booking up fast/are there limited places? ie should I book soon?

The September session is starting to fill up. We hope to have 15 participants. If you are thinking about it, please let me know so I can pencil you in.

10) Who attends the workshops ?

On previous workshops we have had photographers of all levels of experience. They have all been very  supportive and friendly towards each other and  been really enthusiastic and keen to share ideas. Even the most experienced photographers amongst them found something new from the workshops.

PHOTOGRAPHERS SEEKING INSPIRATION RUSH TO THE ‘NEW LOOK’ PHOTOGRAPHERS’ PLACE: UPDATED

By Martin, March 29, 2010 1:00 pm

The ‘new look’ Photographers’ Place workshops have obviously hit the right note because the April weekend filled up very quickly. So a second one has been arranged from 4 to 6 JUNE at Ilam Hall on the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border, this time with a guest – John Davies, the renowned fine art landscape photographer. Although landscape-themed, the workshop will be primarily about ideas and aesthetics as well as processes and methods.

The fabled Photographers’ Place in Derbyshire’s Peak District, which was Britain’s first permanent photography workshop and study centre, originally started in the 1970s and ran for twenty years.

But now the legend lives again with a series of photography weekends run by Martin Shakeshaft, Nick Lockett, and The Photographers’ Place founder, Professor Paul Hill.

The second of the new workshops takes place at the impressive Ilam Hall, near Ashbourne on 4-6 June. As in the original Photographers’ Place, the weekend workshop appeals to those who have gone beyond the beginners’ stage and want  a chance to immerse themselves in photography and explore making landscape photographs from an aesthetic as well as from a technical point of view.
